Understanding Social Determinants of Health: Focus on Food Insecurity

How we market programs to effectively communicate with individuals who are burdened with housing insecurity, disabilities, transportation issues, and food insecurities is very different from how we market programs to consumers in general. And we should be guided by that when we are attempting to address social determinants of health.

Food and housing insecurity along with access to cash and transportation are all economic and social factors which impact the health of individuals. Did you know that at least 20 percent of the social and physical environment that affects our health and well-being are attributed to factors that are out of our control?

"Conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play affect a wide range of health risks and outcomes. These conditions are known as social determinants of health (SDOH)." Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

FOOD INSECURITY

Reduced quality of food, disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake.

CAUSES OF FOOD INSECURITY

Economic instability is key when considering how we address this SDOH. Poverty, lack of education, and poor health due to chronic diseases and disabilities are among the leading causes of food insecurity.
